My Favourite Excerpts from the US Army Survival Manual

On how to catch fish using a technique called “Chop Fishing.” What might this secret art of chop fishing entail?

With the lighted torch in one hand and the machete in the other:

– Wade into the water to a point where the water is about 2 feet deep. The light will attract the fish.
– Hit the fish with the back of the machete blade so they are stunned and then pick them up.

On how to catch a beaver:

Beaver-wait for the beaver to come on land, then club it, drop-kick it, hit it with a rock, or catch it by the tail.

It is a sturdy animal, so if you catch it by the tail, swing it in a pendulum motion until it begins to relax, then swing it against a tree or the ground or use a noose to kill it. Another way to get a beaver is to dig out the beaver dam so the water drains. The beaver will come to inspect the damage at which time you can straddle the channel and grab the beaver by is tail as it swims through. Immediately start to swing the beaver as above.

On how to catch a turtle:

Snapping turtles tend to hide or rest by crawling head first into holes dug into the bank. To locate a turtle in the bank, feel with your feet with your shoes on. When you locate the turtle, reach down and feel for the top of the shell. Grasp the tail, which is located under the serrated edge of the shell, and pick up the turtle.

On whales:

The presence of whales may be disturbing because of their size. But the experience of men on rafts indicates that there is little to fear from whale attacks. Whales move leisurely when not alarmed, but their playful habit of nosing or nudging a raft may be disquieting. The deep, long drawn-out sound of their breathing and the loud sounds made by their tails slapping the water are also startling.

On snakes:

Most bites occur when a person accidentally steps on a snake, so keep your eyes open … take the following precautions to avoid snakebite:

– Avoid areas where snakes are abundant if possible
– Use a snake-stick or walking stick if in a snake-infested area
– Probe before entering an area
-Don’t chase snakes or tease them
